1st Week's Rankings

I'm not sure if I'll continue to do this on a weekly basis, or whether I'll change to bi-weekly or monthly, but I figured it would be interesting to take a look at where things stand after a week of Breaking News.  There have been 31 news stories which met my requirements for inclusion in this blog, and the breakdown of which news sources broke those stories are as follows (in descending order of number of alerts; the second number in parentheses is, for the newspapers on the list, the rank by average daily circulation per http://www.mondotimes.com/newspapers/usa/usatop100.html):

1.  Denver Post (15)(15) - This included a couple of items
where it was the only source to break the news.  It appears
to be the early front-runner for news of an international
 flavor/interest.
2.  Wall Street Journal (14)(1) - No surprise here, as I would
expect it to be among the leaders at breaking stories.
3.  Washington Post (12)(6) - Again, not much of a surprise,
 residing in our nation's capital.
4.  Los Angeles Times (11)(4) - In good company, about where
 I'd expect it to be.
5.  CNN (10) - I was surprised to see them this low on the
 list.
6.  Richmond Times-Dispatch (7)(68) - This newspaper appears
to be working above its station, though the number of alerts
may be boosted by its proximity to DC.
7.  Fox News (6) - I added them to the party later in the week,
so this is actually a pretty good showing.  I expect them to
be near the top of future rankings.
8.  New York Times (5)(3) - Lower than I would expect them to
be for a newspaper with such a high rank for circulation.
Raleigh News & Observer (5)(59) - Another newspaper whose
number of alerts seems higher than its rank in circulation
 would indicate.
10. Chicago Tribune (3)(9) - I was surprised to see it this
low, due both to its rank in circulation, and the fact it's
still the 3d largest city in the country.
Houston Chronicle (3)(12) - About to displace Chicago as 3d
largest city, and keeping pace in news alerts, as well.
 Minneapolis Star-Tribune (3)(17) - My homestate's
largest newspaper, if you didn't catch that already.  Sort
of disappointed in where it stands in terms of alerts.
Boston Herald (3)(62) - The little brother of Boston
newspapers.  I'll try to add newsletters from the Boston
Globe as well, and see where it stands.
Rochester (MN) Post-Bulletin (3)(*) - An admirable showing
for a newspaper that is ranked 7th in MN, behind the big two
(STrib & Pioneer Press), a City Guide, a Seniors Lifestyle
 paper, and 2 Christian newspapers
MSNBC (3) - I added them later in the week, as well, so more
accurate rankings will follow in the future.
16. CBS News (2) - Same as with Fox & MSNBC, late addition.
17. Arizona Republic (1)(14) - Ranked higher in circulation
than I would have expected, though the Phoenix area is still
one of the fastest growing in the country.  Ranked lower in
this list than it should be, accordingly.
Seattle Times (1)(21) - Another newspaper that appears to be
choosy when it comes to sending alerts
Miami Herald (1)(41) - A bit lower in the circulation
rankings, so not as surprising to see it this low in the
 alerts ranks.
Providence Journal (1)(87) - About where I would expect it,
considering that even the Boston newspaper I've followed so
far didn't release many alerts, either.
Duluth News Tribune (1)(*) - Ranked just after Rochester's,
as far as MN newspaper circulation goes, so about where I
 would expect it.
Northland's News Center (MN Iron Range) (1) - The Iron Range
even gets in on some of the action.
ABC News (1) - New entry in the middle of this week, stand
 by for future rankings.
WCCO (CBS MN) (1) - One of my home state's news channels.
WGN Radio (1) - Chicago news radio.

As far as the categories that the news stories covered, those rankings are as follows (I allowed up to 2 categories per article):

1. World (11) - Finished strong due to the allegations at
   News of the World
2. Politics & Economy (7) - Led by the budget talks at the
Federal level, as well as the MN State Government Shutdown
4. Corporate (6) - Again, News of the World
5. Sports (5) - World Cup, Clemens, NFL Lockout
6. Entertainment & Legal (3)
8. Health, Military, Nature, Space, & Terrorism (1 each)
